A Canal That Never Delivered Its Water
Utica traces to 1817 and was platted in 1829, but its most consequential early chapter was the Clinton-Kalamazoo Canal, projected and partially built starting in 1837 to link the Clinton and Kalamazoo rivers. The project drove a speculative boom in 1838 -- a bank chartered, a three-story hotel built -- before the canal went bankrupt and the whole scheme collapsed within about a year. Utica's actual water infrastructure was built later, piecemeal, without the canal it was briefly supposed to have.
