A Postmaster's Name, Then a Population Explosion
Roseville was named for the Roseville Post Office, established in 1840 and named after Denison Rose, father of the area's first postmaster William Rose. It stayed a small Detroit suburb -- part of Orange Township, renamed Erin Township in 1843 -- until 1950. What followed was a genuine population explosion: thousands of new residents arrived through the decade, and hundreds of homes were built in a short span, ahead of the 1958 merger that created the City of Roseville.
