Clinton Township's earliest settlement dates to 1783, when Moravian missionaries arrived along what was then called the Huron River. On July 17, 1824, the Michigan Territorial Legislature renamed both the township and the river after DeWitt Clinton, the New York governor most responsible for building the Erie Canal.
